Vision IQ presented the "first computer vision product
that saves lives: Poseidon", at the eighth International
Conference on Computer Vision - ICCV
2001 - in Vancouver, Canada. During the demo session of
the conference, Vision IQ's research team presented the technical
challenges faced in creating Poseidon, illustrated by images
and videos. Scientific discussions took place around the main
computer vision principles and breakthroughs that went into
the product. Finally, a real time demonstration of Poseidon
using recorded video sequences was shown. Video streams from
10 cameras installed in a swimming pool in Saint Germain en
Laye were analyzed, in real time, on a single laptop!
In addition to this demonstration, Vision IQ researchers
gave several lectures at the conference or during the associated
workshops.
"The POSEIDON stand at ICCV, the most famous international
conference on computer vision, was very impressive. In particular,
the video examples of the capability of the system were completely
convincing. From a technical and scientific point of view,
the POSEIDON team has overcome a real challenge. As a matter
of fact, as far as I know, it is the first vision system,
dedicated to a general consumer application, combining the
syncronization of several video cameras (until more than 10
sensors), that works under natural lighting, and requires
a very accurate calibration process to compensate the important
image distortions due to aquatic surrounding and very short
focal length optics used in the system.
The robustness of the detection of a swimmer in difficulty,
realized by triangulation at great distances and in almost
real time, is now perfectly mastered. Undeniably, Poseidon
can and has already helped to save human lives!" - Michel
